“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.”
(“As You Like It,” by William Shakespeare)
I’ve heard some people say they are here to use their God-given talents to serve humanity. What does it mean to serve humanity? Are we here to serve and be served?
Well, I can only speak for myself. The only one I’m here to serve is Moi. My idea of fun includes pursuing interests in healing, spirituality, critical analysis and writing. Why healing? Because I had a recurring injury which wouldn’t go away and I found I had to explore different healing systems. From my research I learned lots about beliefs and how beliefs can impact one’s perception of self. Spirituality, because I wanted to explore who I am. Writing, because I’ve always been interested in writing.
I believe if you ask any kid under the age of ten, she will tell you why she is here right now because her sense of self has not been stifled by human expectations. My mother tells me when I was around three and a half, I had two affirmations: “I am a clever girl” and “I am a beautiful girl.” By eight, she tells me, I knew exactly what I was going to do with my life.
I remember when I was a child, someone asked me what I was going to do with my life. I said I was going to be a writer. I also knew that I was here to collect experiences/data and I wasn’t going to take writing seriously until I was really old – in my thirties. Then, and only then, would I start writing about my experiences. It was also important that I write what I like. So everything has been leading to this. I am strictly here to experience and record my explorations of consciousness/reality.
What I find about writing schools out there, and I have attended a few, is that they teach people how to write for a particular market, i.e. serving humanity. While there is nothing inherently wrong about this, I found this approach created a block within me. In other words, because I was limiting myself I constantly experienced writer’s block. I even started believing that I had periods of creative cycles. Then I got rid of that approach to writing. First of all I stopped listening to creative writing teachers and trusted in myself. Next, I decided to write for one market only – me. I write only what I would like to read. If I’m not inspired or don’t find the topic interesting I don’t write about it. It really doesn’t matter to me whether anyone reads my work or not. I am the only reader that matters. As for writer’s block, I honestly have no idea what a block is.
When I let go of the idea of serving humanity, I realised I was doing what I did out of pure love. And what I find is that you end up attracting love and appreciation from like-minds. It’s rather like a musician who follows his passion for music which ends up having cross-over appeal. Why? Because love knows no boundaries. The irony is that the love of what one does ends up reaching and serving humanity in a back-handed way.
So I am not into serving anyone, per se. I believe in doing what I love. I believe everyone should do what they are passionate about and not do something out of duty. If your thing is about being a prime minister, why pretend you are here to serve your country? Why not admit to yourself that you love leadership? Your passion will attract to you the attributes necessary, support from your peers and the position of prime minister, when you will end up being the best prime minister you could ever be.
What about those who believe they are here to serve humanity by waking them to their true nature? Again, why not just call a spade a spade? We live in a world of illusions, a world where we are all acting different roles. If you wish to be a teacher why not just be a teacher? In truth, no one needs to be taught since everyone is already omniscient. I believe people are only playing dumb so they can act different roles.
I am not here to serve anyone but to express myself. My role as a researcher/writer might inspire others or it might not. It really doesn’t matter. The best role I know how to play is being true to myself.
