Science has mesmerized mankind to such an extent that a ‘feel good’ tablet without any adverse effect to the body seems to be not far away. Many beliefs of past ages are succumbing to the onslaught inflicted by the new scientific discoveries and products. At the same time unknown fears are also gripping mankind. The well-being of mankind depends on how judiciously we utilize scientific developments.
Science and spirituality are followed with an open mind. Here things happen totally against our set perceptions. Their demarcation is clear-cut, i.e., science is about the nature and physical well-being of the masses and increases the tendency of consumption, while spirituality is related to mental well-being for peace and pleasure with minimum consumption.
In the case of spirituality, the common man’s feeling is that there are many religious sects and groups who are always busy attracting the masses. They offer a package to make people feel good assuring them that all their sufferings and shortcomings in life will be taken care of by their set techniques and designated Gods.
Needless to say that spirituality has nothing to do with dogmatic religions. God is beyond all scriptures and perceptions. A spiritual teacher is capable to point out the way but the aspirer has to cover the path himself to reach the kingdom of God. Everything about the final stage cannot be contained in written and spoken words. The grandness and beauty of the Taj Mahal (Agra, India) is to be seen personally. Other people’s descriptions can only prompt you to see it yourself, and after seeing you will also not be able to tell others, completely and exhaustibly.
As I have pointed out science is connected with the study of matter and energy, i.e. the physical world (Please see my article: Life making a case for re-birth) while spirituality is connected with oneness, and deriving nectar from our relatedness (through the dualistic view). Though the objective of science and spirituality seems to be the welfare of mankind, there is a difference in their approach and concepts.
A child, whose parents are pursuing their careers, feels lonely though he is provided for with a lot of bemusing toys. How long could a new toy satisfy him? The situation comes when the child seeing a new packet with a toy immediately discards it without even opening it! Science in many cases provides such item to mankind, which only make it feel dependant and even miserable, at times.
Many a manual type of job is being done with the help of machines and man has to do some exercises in the minimum time possible, to keep his body fit. A whole day of physical work, which brings tiredness to induce a sound sleep and takes care of digestion, is something that many people miss. They are spending a lot over good eatables, and then exercise to reduce the extra accumulated fat. Both ways resources are being utilized from Mother Nature.
Some wise people feel that dependency on and slavery to modern gadgets is on the increase. Therefore, no opportunity should be missed to do physical work during daytime for maintaining a good health.
The spiritual life of an aspirant is not a bed of roses during practice, and this practice is an unending process usually culminating in getting an eternal companion of mind, and thereafter providing real service to mankind. Getting up early in the morning, self-study, maintaining routine decorum, and removing all vices from the mind means undergoing a rigorous training.
A wise spiritual man is not indulging in by-products like achieving extra-ordinary feats, miracles, a healing capacity, etc. Even if these happen he remains just a witness and smiles over such happenings, knowing well it’s the faith and belief of the beneficiaries that works. But the presence of a spiritual man or such a healer is required as a medium for such miracles to occur.
